Prema arheološkim nalazima, Zaostrog je bio naseljen i u rimsko doba o čemu svjedoče brojni antički spomenici među kojima je reljef bog Mitre i nadgrobni spomenik Aurelia Veturia koji se nalaze u samostanskoj zbirci.Prvi put se Zaostrog spominje 1494. na hrvatskom i turskom jeziku. According to archaeological findings, Zaostrog was also inhabited in Roman times, as evidenced by numerous ancient monuments, including the relief of the god Mitra and the tombstone of Aurelio Veturia, which are in the monastery collection. Zaostrog was first mentioned in 1494 in Croatian and Turkish. Inhabitants of Zaostrog started moving down to the sea as early as the 17th century, and after the earthquake in 1962, like other coastal residents from the settlements below Biokovo, they left the old village and developed tourism in the new Zaostrog - Kraj.
