Pazin je administrativno sjedište Istarske županije i još je u 19. stoljeću, najvećim dijelom zbog središnjeg položaja na Poluotoku, ali i značaja, zaslužio naziv »srce Istre«. Fascinantna slika srednjovjekovne pazinske tvrđave - Kaštela, smještene iznad 130 metara dubokog ponora u kojem rijeka Pazinčica utječe u Pazinsku jamu inspirirala je i poznatog francuskog pisca Julesa Vernea da dio radnje svog romana »Mathias Sandorf«, objavljenog 1885. godine, smjesti upravo u ovaj ambijent.
