A unique spatial entity, the island of Hvar, as part of the county territory, is one of the larger islands in the Croatian Adriatic, while within the Split-Dalmatia County it is the second largest (after Brač). The island's economy is based on tourism and agriculture (wine and olive growing) and fishing. The municipality of Jelsa is located on the northern and southern coast of the central part of the island of Hvar. It covers an area of ​​121.2 km2. According to the 2001 census, the municipality of Jelsa has 3,656 inhabitants. It includes 12 settlements: Gdinj, Gromin Dolac, Humac, Ivan Dolac, Jelsa, Pitve, Poljica, Svirče, Vrboska, Vrisnik, Zavala and Zastražišće. The area of ​​the municipality of Jelsa, as well as the entire island, has a richly indented coastline with its own islets, numerous bays and islands. Jelsa is bordered by the two highest peaks of the island, Sv. Nikola to the west and Hum to the east. Jelsa has a mild climate, with warm winters and pleasant summers, and the entire area of ​​the municipality is rich in lush Mediterranean vegetation.
The economic basis of the settlement, which has approximately 1600 inhabitants, is agriculture, viticulture, olive growing, fishing, shipping and tourism. Jelsa is connected to the surrounding settlements by local roads, and by boat to Split and Bol on Brač. The location is located in the eastern part of the settlement of Jelsa, in the immediate vicinity of the popular beach of Mina in the picturesque bay of the same name.
